Pros and Cons of Trait Based Theory
Trait Based Theory offers a structured take on the definition of a leader. Through this theory, a list of traits is offered as the defining characteristics of what makes someone a leader. This can be a good thing in the sense that people can view it as an opportunity to improve upon and enhance some of the traits they lack, however, it can also scare people from trying to become leaders if they are lacking in multiple traits listed. In addition, it emphasizes the idea that if you don’t possess the right traits, you cannot become a leader. This can be an issue in situations that don’t necessarily have someone with all the defining traits to be leader in the group, who then, will lead them to success and inspire them to complete their goals? Pros and Cons of Great Man Theory Great Man Theory offers a direct and distinguishable idea of what a leader should look like, how a leader should act, and what traits a leader should possess. This can provide a sense of authority and offer a guided sense of who a leader is. However, by displaying a leader as a male who was born a leader, you detract women from being considered as leaders and waive the ability for someone who wants to become a leader that wasn’t born into it. |
