Level 5 leaders using situational leadership |
The Blanchard Situational Leadership Model provides a theory which emphasizes that leaders operate a certain way according to the assumptions they make about their employees behavior at work. I recall an instance at my old catering job where my manager, April, exemplified this theory. The first shift I worked with April, she asked about my major and what I wanted to do, after finding out I was a hospitality student who was motivated to learn more about events and excited to work, she began to teach me. Instead of just telling me what to do and how to do it, April would explain the event details and then ask me how I thought the set up should be, then ask me to set it up that way. At first, I was nervous, not knowing if what I was doing was correct and worried that I might make a mistake, however, as we set up events, she was alongside me. If I had placed something where it shouldn't be, she would ask me why I chose to place it there which made me rethink and evaluate a better possible location. Knowing that I was looking for some guidance and excited to learn more about the catering department, April took the initiative to coach me in the process. This exemplified Blanchard's model because she first evaluated what type of worker I was and what I was looking for in the job, then, proceeded to coach me after finding out I wanted to learn more. This example was a positive instance in which Blanchard's theory worked as it provided accurate leadership to the employee as well as successfully accomplished the goal of the leader. |
As stated in my previous blog, Level 5 leaders are those who have fierce will and humility. In order to succeed as a level 5 leader, you must have the ability to put your all into your company and your team as well as set them up for success. In addition, you must be humble in your actions and genuine int he way you treat those below you. With that being stated, it is clearly shown that level 5 leadership is not just about the leader, but also his followers attitudes and perspectives in the company and towards the leader. A quote from the book Good to great by Jim Collins states "The Good-to-Great companies made a habit of putting their best people on their best opportunities, not their biggest problems." This quote is the perfect example of Level 5 leaders can incorporate situational leadership into their leadership style. As the quote implies, Level 5 leaders do not make the mistake of assigning their workers to their best opportunities but rather to their faults, because the best people are the ones who can come up with the best solutions. By combining a Level 5 leader, the right followers, and assigning tasks based on the situation, analyzing who would be best for each task, Level 5 leaders can incorporate the situational leadership style in order to improve their efforts and grow the company. |
