My immediate goals in obtaining work-related experience is to apply to catering services, hotels, and hopefully a wedding planning system of some kind. As of right now, I am very interested in the idea of becoming a wedding planner. Whenever I attend parties of any kind, I always find myself wanting to be behind the scenes instead of being a guest of the event. Whether it be helping out in the kitchen, registration area, or setting up, I would much rather serve the cake than eat it (Although, eating cake is nice too). Overall, I like the idea of planning events in general. The reason I decided I want to specially plan weddings is because I love the fact that I could help someone’s dreams come true and create a day that they will never forget; an event that will be forever replayed in their memories. However, until I can gain experience in that field, I am currently learning the ins and outs of event planning as a whole. For this academic year, I am on the executive board of an on campus organization titled Asian Pacific Student Alliance (APSA). My position on board is Academic Coordinator Assistant and within my duties, is the responsibility of planning and putting on an event called a High School Conference. The purpose of the event is to promote academics and higher education to high school students. When students attend this event, they learn more about the opportunities that college has to offer. This is achieved through a key note speaker, a student panel, various workshops, and a video showcasing the message we want them to take away. It is my job to plan the entire event with my co-coordinator and make sure everything is run smoothly on the day of the event. Going into this project, I didn’t realize how much time, effort, and creativity went into creating such an event. This process is opening my eyes to what event planning actually consists of and I’m glad I’m getting a small taste of it right away. So far, the planning has already had some bumps in the road but I am looking forward to tackling the next challenges thrown my way and seeing the end result of my hard work.
