In order to reach my goal of entering the meetings and events industry, I am following a map of classes through my journey at San Diego State University. I met with a Hospitality and Tourism Management student adviser to get advice on what classes I should take in order to fulfill my requirements and follow my course map.
The classes I have already taken are as follows...
- COMM103: In this class, I practiced giving speeches to my classmates in order to build more confidence in public speaking. I would say this class was definitely a challenge for me but it was also interesting to learn about the different forms of communication.
- RWS200: In this class, we wrote essays and studied the different types of arguments you can have in an essay and how to correctly share them. We also had a debate which was a little of a challenge for me but in the end, helped me learn how to create good arguments.
- GEOG106: In this class, we learned about the different regions of the world and studied the different landscapes, people, and traditions each had. I thought it was a very interesting course in which I learned a lot about the world outside of the U.S.
- HIST109: In this class, we learned about World War II and important events that occurred in history. I was never a fan of learning about history but this class was actually really interesting and the teacher made it easy to relate to and understand.
The classes I am currently taking...
- HTM201: This is a class titled "Hospitality and Tourism Management 201" We explore the different emphases in the Hospitality and Tourism Management major through guest speakers and class projects and we also start developing networks with our classmates.
- ECON101: In this class, I am currently learning about how the economy works. We study the supply and demand curve and the shifts that take place depending on how well or poor the economy is. I would say this class is one of my more difficult ones this semester because there are so many aspects that go into the economy and figuring out how it stays balanced.
- MATH120: In this class, we study business related calculus such as finding interest rates, solving derivatives, and finding the limit of graphs. This class is somewhat challenging because there are many concepts and equations to remember but I personally, and a big fan of math.
- SPAN101: In this class, we learn about the Spanish language. This includes vocabulary, grammar, and culture. Overall, it is a fun class and probably my favorite this semester.
- RELS101: In this class, we learn about the similarities and differences of different religions. I find it really interesting that many religions have very similar concepts yet are completely different.
Next semester, I plan on taking...
- STATS119: I plan on taking this course either next semester or during the summer depending on what my schedule permits for. I'm not too worried about it since I love math and have heard the class isn't too difficult.
- MIS180: I don't know much about this class or what to expect from it so I am a little worried. However, I plan on taking it in the spring semester with an open mind.
- RWS290: I'm excited to take this course because I heard it is writing for the business world. I usually like writing in general so I'm interested to see what types of things business related majors will need to write.
- BIO100: I'm a little worried about this course since science is not one of my best subjects but I believe with a lot of studying and dedication, I'll do just fine.
- BIOL100: I'm hoping that I will be better at labs than I am at actual science classes and I am excited to take a class where I can do some hands on learning, since I personally tend to learn better that way.
